River City Girls was released by WayForward for NIntendo Switch, Playstation 4, and Xbox One in 2019. The brawler featured incredible pixel-art accompanied by anime/manga style cutscenes. It was incredibly fun, particularly with a couch co-op partner.
While the rest of the game is great, the soundtrack stood out as one of the highlights of the year, winning Best Chiptune/Retro Score at the 2019 Game Music Awards. The catchy soundtrack was largely composed by Megan McDuffie, with contributions from Chipzel, Cristina Vee, Dale North, and NateWantsToBattle. WayForward has a great interview with Megan McDuffie about the soundtrack.
Along with a prequel and sequel that are announced, River City Girls is being ported to the Playstation 5. Limited Run Games has a Collector’s Edition of River City Girls available that includes a 2 CD version of the soundtrack. This Playstation 5 edition is available for pre-order until September 12th, 2021.
